DAY 06 // Much of this day was spent on the road. We made our way from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon towards the small town of Hofn. It takes about three hours to get to Hofn from the Glacier Lagoon. We stocked up on groceries and went on a search for a place to do laundry. Campsites usually offer a washer and dryer but the one we drove in to only had a washer no dryer. The second campsite had both washer and dryer but was out of order! So the search continued. We asked many locals and one suggested the town’s pool. Which happened to be a great idea because they had a washer and dryer available, just not for public use. However they knew we were struggling and were kind enough to offer the laundry machines. We ended up sharing the w/d with couple travelers in the same boat as us since we all didn’t want to spend the whole day doing laundry.
From Hofn, it’s another four hours to the next largest town, Egilsstaoir. Make sure to fill up gas whenever you can while driving through Iceland. In many cases, it could be awhile before you see another gas. It’s common to see unattended gas stations which means you have to pay using gas cards through the machines. Heading towards Dettifoss, we were very close to running out of fuel but luckily for us we stopped and filled up at Egilsstaoir and bought extra gas cards.
Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. We arrived pretty late in the evening but wanted to take a peek at this massive waterfall. There is a short walking path that will lead you to the falls. Make sure you bring a rain coat because the mist from the waterfall will get you wet.
