DAY 04 //After a full day watching waterfalls, we headed towards a little town called Vik. It’s famous for the beautiful black sand beaches and the plane crash site. To be honest, I didn’t have much interest in the plane but Y wanted to check it out. The plane was a US Navy plane that ran out of fuel and crashed at the location. All the crew members survived, and the wreckage was left abandoned which overtime became a popular touristy site. I’m glad we visited the location because the wreckage and the surroundings were so surreal. Due to Iceland’s fickle weather, the rocky road to the plane felt like we were on the moon (or at least what I imagine the moon to be like!).
Unfortunately, the site is closed off for vehicles due to safety concerns. According to the website, the location path will be closed until they build a safe path for tourists.
Dyrhólaey beach is stunning (I’m running out of adjectives to describe Iceland, because frankly every inch of land is AMAZING!). The view is absolutely amazing at the top of the cliff. You can also walk down below and spend time exploring the area. It started to rain when we arrived so we didn’t linger too long but would love to go back and explore around.
Our next stop, Reynisfjara. The weather here was insanely windy and quite foggy when we arrived. There are some mesmerizing rock formations and black sand here. Don’t miss it!
What you’ll quickly learn about road tripping in Iceland is that the landscape is constantly changing. It was hard not to stop every mile. Our journey from Reynisfjara to Vatnajokull, we stopped for many little adventures.
