DAY 02 // We dedicated this day to hit up the Golden Circle, which is composed of three major landmarks, Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfos. So if you don’t have a lot of time to dedicate in Iceland or in a short layover – this is the perfect adventure for you. The Golden Circle is about 185 miles (300km). We started off at Þingvellir National Park. When we arrived we were in search of a bathroom (the downside of campervanning!). The park’s restroom had a beautiful view, though it was one of the few bathrooms we had to pay for (200isk – roughly $1.60). From the visitors center you can see the cracks and faults from the continental drift between the North American and Eurasian plates. There are many walking paths throughout the park, the main path will lead to the small waterfall Öxarárfoss.
On our way to see the Geysir, we stopped by Efsti-dalur II Farm for lunch. After lunch don’t forget to try the ice cream at the shop below.
As we approached Haukadalur Valley, the home of The Great Geysir, you could smell the stench of sulfur and the ground below boiling. Surrounding the largest Geysir are smaller pools in the ground creating beautiful hues, sulfur and other minerals. The Geysir is unpredictable, but erupted every 15 mins or so be careful as to not stand too close as a few people got wet from the back splash!
Our final destination for the day Gulfoss – this massive beautiful waterfall. In a lot of ways it reminded me of Iguazu falls in Argentina. Bring your rain jacket and bags for the camera as the powerful waterfall creates a big mist of water all around. It looks quite magical – you can view the falls from the top or take a short walk to get up close and personal.
