tell us about how baba souk started
a few years ago, i stepped into marrakesh’s souk market for the very first time. the color overload, the smell, the beauty… it changed my destiny. at that time, i had that job, the one every girl would envy. i was a clothing designer for a canadian retailer and i traveled the world in search of the latest trends, but the thing is, i just had to follow my dreams.
i had the sudden urge to create my own souk, my online version of a modern market, a fun “baba” souk. i needed to celebrate indie design and handmade treasures. baba souk was born last november out of a desire to live a creative and meaningful life.
in the baba souk boutique, every item is handpicked and is chosen to please cool cats with creative souls. it’s a place where you can find the perfect gift or the quirkiest treat for yourself. i love to imagine the smiles on their faces when customers open their baba souk mail and see the beautiful gift packaging and our sweet handwritten note. i think simple pleasures like these can bring happiness to everyday life.
is running baba souk your full time job?
i’ve been running baba souk full- time since it’s opening last november. i really want to give it my all! i also freelance as a guest blogger, (you can find my weekly column etsyfest and colorfest via designlovefest). i also work as a pinterest curator for some clients. i’m a pinterest addict, i have to watch myself!
what is the most important thing you’ve leaned since you’ve started your own business?
oh my! i’ve learned so many things, it’s been an incredible school! one thing in particular is that “action” is the most important thing. you’ve just got to get things done, everyday, without procrastinating or double guessing too much. we can be our own enemies sometimes, we have got to stop judging ourselves and just go for it. i work on this everyday!
what has been your favorite moment so far?
i’ve met some really talented artists and i feel so good about promoting their work. i really have endless admiration for indie designers, it takes such courage and perseverance to get your work out there. it feels right to be showcasing indie designers in my boutique.
where do you see baba souk in 5 years?
my vision is a really cool studio space with a bunch of fun creative minds working together to make baba souk an inspiring destination. i see a photo studio, an amazing baba souk product line created in collaboration with indie designers i love and oh! i see some fun pop-up shops happening!
